Many people get stressed out about how to find a plumber, mostly because they do not think about finding one before they have an emergency situation on their hands. Finding a local plumber, however, does not have to be a stressful situation, especially if a little searching and planning go on before there is a gigantic leak in the house or office.

Certification and Recommendation

One of the best ways to go on how to find a plumber is to ask around. Spend time asking friends and family members who they have used in the past and whether or not they were happy with the service. Also ask the neighbors who they have used and what their opinion was about the service. Be sure to ask what the specific plumbing problem was so that a better feel can be had about the expertise required for the job.

Once a basic list of plumbers has been formed from friends, family and neighbors, then it is time to start calling the various companies to ask what the qualifications are of the plumbers. This is an important step in how to find a plumber. There are different expertise levels required in order to gain different plumbing licenses. Each level determines what plumber would be appropriate according to the type of job. One would not want to hire a Tradesman plumber to oversee the plumbing system of a large office building, since they do not have the experience or expertise to manage others or design the system.

The phone calls made in how to find a plumber should be done with the specific licensing questions on hand. A Tradesman license ensures that the plumber has at least two years experience. A Journeyman license ensures that the plumber has had at least four years experience under a Master plumber. A Master plumber’s license means that the plumber has been a Journeyman for at least a year before taking the Master plumbing exam, thus ensuring five years experience in the field. In addition, since the test is a state licensing exam, if a plumber has worked in another state, they must take the exam in their current state, otherwise they are not licensed in that state.

All of these questions and recommendations about how to find a plumber should provide a person with a solid list of plumbers that they can call should a problem arise, without going into a panicked state of mind. It is still recommended that the person call at least three of the plumbers from the list to get estimates before choosing one, so that the best price and time quote can be chosen. It is important to get these quotes in writing so that there is not an argument or misunderstanding later.

To become a plumber, you do need a license, and so if you want to be a plumber for the Journeyman Company, you are going to need to take a Journeyman plumber exam and get your Journeyman plumber license. This is necessary for you to legally become a Journeyman plumber, but it will be well worth it in the end when you actually have the job.

There are many benefits that are offered by a plumber’s job after all, and which you will want to be aware of, even if you have never thought of being a plumber before. So before you take it all too seriously and head out to get your Journeyman plumber license, here are a few things that you are going to want to think very seriously about.

Salary

The first thing you are going to want to think about before getting your Journeyman plumber license is whether or not you are going to be making a high enough salary. After all, you may be married and have children, and either way you are going to have bills that you need taken care of.

Just keep in mind, even if the salary is not enough alone, you could always get an additional part-time job on the side, just so you have

Hours

Another issue to think about before getting your Journeyman plumber license is whether you are going to be willing and able to work the long hours, as required. Most plumbers work full time and are on call, which means that they can be called at home to come in and work whenever necessary.

Even if you have other work or arrangements, if you want to become a Journeyman plumber, you are going to need to make certain sacrifices, and be willing to work as the job requires.

Career

You are also going to want to think about whether or not you would really be able to handle having this job for the rest of your life. If you are going to go through all the hassle of getting your Journeyman plumber license, make sure that you are in it for the long run. There is no point in getting the education and trying out for the job if you think that this is not a job you are going to enjoy.

There are various different Journeyman plumbing centers located around North America, and anyone interested in working there can walk in and speak to the manager to see if they are hiring.

Finding a reliable plumber is something that cannot wait until there is a reason to need one. There are many different ways to go about screening for a plumber so that when the situation arises; there will be a handy list with a few different options to choose from. It is important to find a reliable plumber, meaning one that has been highly recommended, has all the qualifications desired, and is available in case of emergencies, even if it is on the weekend.

Who and What to Ask

There are many different places where a person can find a plumber. One place to search is online. If the plumbing company has a website, a person can find out a lot of information about how they work, how long they have been in business, what types of service plans they have available, who they are licensed with, and what type of experience they require of their plumbers.

Another place to find a reliable plumber is looking in the phone book. Sometimes the advertisements give more information about the plumbing company as well as who they are licensed with. Using the phone book does not give as much information, so it will usually require the person taking the time to call the company to ask questions about the information that may be found online.

Friends, neighbors and family members are also great resources to finding a reliable plumber. Most have had some experience with a plumber, especially if they own their own home, so they may have valuable feedback for consideration, even if the feedback is negative. Negative feedback is good because it can save a person from a bad situation.

Another resource, once a basic list of possible plumbers has been compiled, is to do a comparison search online. There are often reviews and forums that can be found in which customers rate various companies according to different qualities, such as work ethic, pricing, and customer service. In addition, organizations such as the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE) that watchdog plumbing companies and individual plumbers, provide lists of member organizations, each of which they certify uphold certain standards.

When there is a certain problem that needs to be fixed, the last stage of finding a reliable plumber is to call at least three to give estimates on the job. Each estimate needs to be in writing and include the specific services to be done, what supplies are needed, how long it should take and the estimated cost.

Anti-siphon spigots are the homeowner’s hero for those who live in cold winter climates. For an extra dollar or two you can avoid having to replace an outdoor spigot due to low temperatures. Here’s why…

In areas where winter temperatures get below 20F/-7C, it’s possible for trapped water in the spigot and sillcock to freeze and expand. The figure is approximate. It’s certainly possible for that same water to freeze at 32F/0C, but heat from the house helps lower the ‘danger point’ temperature somewhat.

That ice now presents two possible problems, similar to those that cause pipes under the house to sometimes burst in winter.

The ice takes up more room than the water did. You can test that by filling a cup exactly to the rim with water then putting it into the freezer. You’ll note that the ice sticks slightly above the rim. That extra volume is no problem when the top is open. But when the water/ice has nowhere to expand, it raises the pressure on the container. Raise it enough and you can break a seal.

The major effect, though, is due to the fact that the pressure builds up beyond the ice block. Air and water have nowhere to go. The air is compressible, but any trapped water will create high pressure on the internal parts of the sillcock and spigot. Even strong metals, made more brittle by the cold anyway, can be split. Plastic and cold-hardened rubber are doomed.

When the weather warms again and everything melts, you now have a spigot with a crack. If it doesn’t leak spontaneously, turning it on will guarantee a drip or worse.

An anti-siphon spigot contains an additional mechanism beyond the ordinary outdoor water faucet. Hoses attach like normal, but inside and out they have features to prevent the spigot from bursting due to ice blockage and expansion.

A few things help prevent the anti-siphon spigot from cracking like an ordinary one.

The seal/valve that actually shuts off the water flow is further back in the sillcock – inside the house, which is warmer. That helps prevent cold temperatures from reaching the water. More helpful still is the ability of the sillcock to withdraw water away from areas where ice buildup can be a problem. It keeps the water from remaining near seals that can be frozen and cracked by low temperatures.

But most importantly, the design of the sillcock/spigot allows for the relief of pressure for any ice that does form. It gives a place for expanding water to go when pressure builds up in other parts of the sillcock/spigot.

Even so, in warm conditions and with normal use, it’s possible for anti-siphon spigots to leak out the top pressure-relieving spout or elsewhere. Kits with replacement seals and other internal parts are available for a few dollars. For those who prefer to repair rather than replace, or if the other end of the sillcock is difficult to access, these kits can save money and time.

Toilet repairs run the gamut. It can be as extensive as a complete replacement or as simple as replacing a broken flush handle. All of them are well within the ability of the average do-it-yourselfer.

Leaks around the base are usually a sign that the toilet will have to be replaced. In some cases, it’s a simple tear in the wax paper that was used to seal the hole in the floor. Sometimes a kind of grease is used instead and it can dry out or acquire a hole. In those cases, the old toilet can be re-used but the steps for repair are the same as installing a new toilet.

Other problems are much more common.

When you hear the toilet water continue to run forever, a few simple things can be the culprit. Inside the tank is a large plastic ball that floats called, not suprisingly, a float. It’s attached to a rod that controls a valve. If the ball never rises enough to shut off the water, it will continue to run.

Test that by pulling up on the rod. The water flow should stop almost instantly. If it does, simply bend the rod down slightly until the ball floats high enough to shut off the valve.

In more typical cases, the cause is the failure of the small rubber stopper or flapper at the base of the tank used to seal off the hole. Water leaks through the hole and the float does its job by falling down as the water level lowers. That opens the valve and the water runs. Continuously. Very annoying.

There are two basic ways to repair that situation.

Sometimes it’s possible to simply take a rough sponge or pad of steel wool and scour off any slime on the base of the rubber stopper. If its surface became uneven due to mold build-up, small cracks open up when it doesn’t seat properly.

Sometimes that rubber stopper can be defective, or the hinges may break. Occasionally the small metal pins that secure the hinges to the toilet may break from having rusted then moved many times. In all such cases, just buy a kit and re-install the stopper using the simple instructions on the package.

It may take years, but the rod connected to the flush handle does sometimes break if made of plastic or corrode until it breaks if made of metal. These are inexpensive and easy to replace. Each will last about as long as the other. Just remove the clip that attaches the rod inside to the chain. Then remove the small plastic and/or metal retaining nuts and replace the part.

On rare occasions it may be necessary to replace the floating ball, water feed tube or other parts. Kits are available that contain all these parts. Installation is simple by following the instructions on the package.

It takes about five years of training to become a Master plumber, which is the highest level of licensing other than going on to become a plumbing inspector. There are lower levels of licensing which require two to four years to obtain, but the level of work that these are able to do is more constrained than that of a Master plumber, and the salaries are not as high.

A person who is interested to become a licensed plumber must be someone who is fairly agile and strong. Plumbing is an active career and requires being able to lift heavy objects, hold them in place, use power tools and move things around. It also requires fitting into tight spaces and still being able to maneuver things around, thus making the typical description of an overweight plumber a difficult one to swallow, considering the job description.

Steps to Licensing

There are three main steps to become a licensed plumber. The first step is to get training in a plumber training program through a college, university or trade school. This training program teaches the aspiring plumber math and science that is needed to do his job, mechanical design skills so that they can draw out the plumbing systems in new builds as well as read them, and also gives them skill in repairing walls and floors for when they have to cut holes in these in order to fix a leak.

The next part of the training to become a licensed plumber is the actual apprenticeship that is done under the supervision of a licensed plumber of Journeyman or Master status. The apprentice must complete at least four thousand hours under the licensed plumber before he is eligible to take the Tradesman licensing exam, which is the lowest level of licensing for a plumber and is limited in scope. Four thousand hours equals out to about two years on the job full time.

During the apprenticeship part of the training, the plumber learns all about pipes, tubing and fittings. He learns to detect leaks and to read building and wiring plans. He also learns to repair appliances such as washers, dish washers and disposals, as well as installing fixtures such as faucets, drains, sinks and tubs. In addition, the apprentice learns about customer service and managing other workers, all of which are important to becoming a licensed plumber.

The final step to becoming a licensed plumber is to take the licensing exam which has three parts. The first part is the written portion. The second part requires the sanitary waste and vent installation be proved out in a practical, hands on way. The final part is in the shop, doing work measuring and cutting, showing the use of tools.

Some people get stumped when trying to decide where to find a plumber. Too often they get trapped in the trap of trying to find a plumber at the last minute, when they are in a time of crisis. This can lead to additional problems, since an incompetent plumber can cause additional problems that would have to be solved at a later date and could require more help than just for the plumbing issue, such as flooring. Also, plumbers who are not honest can cost the person more than the job is worth. All of these reasons make the problem of where to find a plumber a critical issue to solve before there is a crisis.

Online, Phone Book, and Friends

Once choice in where to find a plumber is to look and find a plumber online. This is a good option if the person has some good researching skills so that he can narrow the search down to his local area. Online is a good place in where to find a plumber because it has so many resources to choose from. There are also reviews that can be found online so that a person can see what other customers have to say about the quality of service given by different plumbing companies. Plumbing companies that have websites also provide information about their company, including what certifications they require their plumbers to have as well as how long they have been in business and their contact information.

The downside to the online version of where to find a plumber is that websites are created to show the best side of the company, which can be misleading just like any advertising. There must be more research done in order to verify information and find out more about the company. The phone book as a resource on where to find a plumber has the same problem. While it gives contact and sometimes a basic advertisement for the company, there really is not much specific information from which to make a choice. The company must be called and specific questions asked in order to narrow down the search.

One of the best options in where to find a plumber is to ask friends and neighbors what plumbing company they have used in the past and whether they would choose that company again. Asking them what type of job was done is also critical so that it can be compared to any job presently required or that may be required in the future. Once a list is compiled, it is still a good idea to verify information with the company itself, as it may have changed ownership since it was used by the friend or neighbor.

Installing a new kitchen sink is not the most difficult do-it-yourself home project. But it will take all day, usually. Take it step by step and you can’t go wrong.

First, you’ll have to disconnect any and all attachments to the sink except possibly the faucet, unless you plan to re-use it.

Before that can be done it’s necessary to turn off any water valves. In most kitchens a simple turn of the under-the-sink valves will do the trick. In others, it may be necessary to turn off the main valve for the house.

Next, kick off the circuit breaker that protects the circuit for the garbage disposal unit. Don’t rely only on the above-the-sink wall switch.

Put a bucket under the pipes to catch any trapped water, along with a few towels. There’s always some water that manages to miss the bucket.

Now it’s safe to disconnect all wires, hoses, pipes and water lines that attach to the sink. That includes any dishwasher line and wires for the garbage disposal, along with any line to a separate hand sprayer.

The kitchen sink can be secured to the cabinetry in a number of ways. In some cases there are mounting clips that need to be removed. In most installations, plumber’s putty will have been used to adhere the sink into position. Even with all clips or nuts removed, it will be a challenge to get the sink loose.

Work a stiff utility knife into the line between the sink and cabinet. If you work from above, you’ll have better leverage, but a higher risk of slipping and damaging the counter. Some topside work will usually be necessary in any case to remove any old caulk. Once that’s done, the hardest part is over.

There’s still some unpleasant clean up to do, since it’s necessary to remove any existing caulk and/or plumber’s putty from the parts that held the sink. It’s important to have a clean, smooth surface before placing the new sink into position. That will require a combination of putty knife use and sanding.

Install any separate strainer into the new sink before putting it into position. Some new sinks have them already secured. Plumber’s putty is used to seal it. More putty will be needed around the rim of the opening the sink sets into.

Spread a 1/4 inch bead and set the sink onto it. With a wooden cuticle removal tool or ice cream stick, scrape any excess off before it has time to dry. Remove any small remainder with a very slightly damp sponge. Repeat the operation with caulk along the back and side edges if there are any areas where water might seep in.

Allow the sink to set untouched for a few hours to give everything time to solidify. Now is a good time to attach any mounting clips, while things are still somewhat flexible.

In the meantime, you can measure all hoses, pipes and other attachments to ensure they all fit well with the new sink. Trim as needed. Now is a good time to inspect any rubber hoses for possible replacement.

Replace the garbage disposal unit. Then, re-attach all hoses and pipes, using Teflon plumber’s tape. Open the water valve slowly and test for leaks. Then turn on the circuit breaker for the garbage disposal unit and test.
